The Wayland boys’ varsity golf team appears to be on a roll.

The Wildcats last Friday won a five-team invitational with a nice 320 team score for 18 holes and then came back Monday to capture their first O-K Gold Conference jamboree championship.

It was cold, rainy and windy at Kent Country Club for the fourth league meet of the season, and coach Chris Drew remarked that the weather must have been just fine with Wayland, which shot its best nine-hole round of the year with a 160, eight strokes better than all six competitors.

Drew beamed, “I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to throw out a 42 in a tournament. All six players played great golf today. I’m so proud of our team.”

“I was really excited to come in with a 42 today, but was really happy to see it get thrown out, ” said Rory Bessinger, the odd man out on Monday.

The Wildcats were led by Mitch Salisbury with a 39.

“Mitch is now the sixth Wildcat to be the team medalist this season,” Drew said.

The other scores from Wayland were Jake Omness and Robert Mucci both with 40, Rory Myers with 41 and Carson Sevigny with 46.

The win puts Wayland one point out of first place in the cumulative standings, behind co-leaders Forest Hills Eastern and East Grand Rapids.

Wayland had two golfers in the top five at Friday’s invitational, which included Plainwell, Allegan, Otsego and Delton. Ty Rayman of Otsego led all scores with at 73, but the Wildcats followed in second and third with a 75 from Jake Omness and a 78 from Rory Myers.

“We are a very deep team, but it is always nice to get low scores from your number 1 and 2,” said Drew. “It was great to see Jake and Rory finally put some low scores up. They are both capable of doing that on a regular basis. It hasn’t been that way for the first half of the season, but I hope this will get them going for the rest of the year.”

Wayland rounded out their scoring with a 82 from Mitch Salisbury and an 85 from Carson Sevigny.

The Wildcats will travel to Bedford Valley Saturday.
