Boys-SoccerThe Wayland varsity boys’ soccer team recorded its first victory of the season Thursday, beating Hamilton 4-2.

Coach Ben Sleeman said the momentum of the game shifted late in the first half when Jake Larsen saved a penalty kick and shortly after, Chuck Wroblewski scored on an assist from Mitchell Dykstra, breaking a scoreless tie.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead early in the half on a goal by Tristen Ortiz with an assist from Josh Klump. The Hawkeyes responded quickly by scoring twice to bring the game back to level terms.

Not to be outdone though, Wroblewski netted his second goal of the game after Michael Rybiski assisted him. The two teams battled for the last 15 minutes until Ortiz was taken down in the penalty box with 4 minutes left in the game. He calmly put the ensuing penalty kick into the back of the net.

The win brings the team’s overall record to 1-6 on the season.

Larsen posted five saves on the night.

The boys have a long weekend break and won’t be back in action until next Friday when they travel to take on neighborhood rival Hopkins for their next game.
