The Wayland softball team recorded a 15-2 victory Tuesday afternoon over South Christian in the Division 2 district opener at Hopkins.
The Wildcats used an eight-run rally in the second inning to blow the contest wide open, with Kami Morse, Liberty Laker, Rya Vanderkooi, Emma Ludema and Emma Tornes coming up with run-scoring hits. Morse’s blow was a home run and Tornes belted a double.
Hannah Rairigh drove in two runs with a single in the first inning.
Senior ace Emma Ludema hurled five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out nine. She didn’t walk a batter.
Leading the Wildcat attack was Reese Veltman, going 2-for-2, with a double. Emma Tornes was 2-4 with two doubles. Kaelyn Sikkema had two hits and a walk. Rya VanderKooi had two hits and Kennedy Cole, Hannah Rairigh, Harmony Laker, Liberty Laker and Grace Kincaid each had one hit.
Wayland now is 31-1 overall for the season and will face another O-K Gold Conference opponent, Middleville Thornapple Kellogg, at 10 a.m. Saturday in the second round of the tourney. Host Hopkins will take on Hastings in the second game at noon.
Winners of the two ballgames will face off at 2 p.m. Saturday in the finals.
