Wildcats absorb a 62-21 defeat from South Christian

The Wayland High School Band prepares to take the field at halftime with the scoreboard showing a 42-7 deficit.

A South Christian football team smarting from a loss a week ago to Grand Rapids Catholic Central, bounced back in a big way on the gridiron Friday to spoil Wayland’s homecoming, 62-21.

The Sailors wasted no time in taking control of the game, rolling up a 42-7 advantage by intermission and then coasting in the second half under the watchful eyes of a running clock.

The loss dropped Wayland to an 0-5 record on the season overall. Things don’t promise to get better soon, as the Wildcats next Friday have to face unbeaten powerhouse Grand Rapids Catholic Central, which is fresh from a 47-7 shellacking of Ottawa Hills.

Wayland is 0-3 in the O-K Gold Conference standings. South Christian, meanwhile, is 2-1.
