Wildcats’ Adam Huff is state champion in discus

Hopkins pole vaulter Landen Klinge was fifth in the state meet.

Wayland junior thrower Adam Huff captured the Division 2 state championship in the discus Saturday at Hamilton High School by hurling the object 172-0.

Huff owns the school record in the discus and the shot. He didn’t match his school record of 180-04, but took all the marbles nonetheless.

Huff last year was state runner-up in the discus.

Meanwhile, it’s been a rough spring for sophomore Evie Mathis, a pole vaulter whose injuries have sidelined her for most track meets.

But Mathis was able to come back and finish second for the second straight year in the event at the state level. She was runner-up in the pole vault in 2023 and this year cleared 11-6 to repeat. She holds the Wayland school record at 12-3.

Also at the meet, Kennedy Jasinski cleared 11-3 to tie for seventh place in the event.

Wayland boys scored 19 points in the state meet to tie for 13th place with Lansing Sexton. The Wildcats girls scored nine points to tie with Stevensville Lakeshore for 26th.

The Hopkins girls scored 7.5 points, as Jaeden Harshberger took fifth with a school record-tying performance 5-3 in the high jump.
