The Wayland softball team brought the heavy lumber to its season opener Monday afternoon against Allendale.
The Lady Wildcats pounded out seven home runs and score 29 runs in a doubleheader sweep, 16-5 and 13-1.
Junior hurler Madi Ludema limited the Falcons to five hits in the opener. Meanwhile, every Wildcat in the lineup had at least one hit.
Izzy Johnson drove home three runs with a pair of safeties, including a homer. Third sacker Rae Stallard had two hits and four RBIs. Catcher Kaylee Lown and first sacker Mackenzie Kusitsky also delivered a couple of hits apiece.
Harmony Laker, Ludema and Stallard each had four-bagger in the opener.
Ludema struck out 10 batters.
The game was halted after the sixth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule. The Wildcats busted up a 1-1 tie in the third inning with two runs and added two more in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Senior Harmony Laker hurled in the nightcap, walking three and striking out two. Only two of the Allendale runs were earned.
Johnson boomed a couple of dingers and Lown had one. Wayland came up with 14 hits to make things easy for Laker.
Ludema, Shelby VanHouten, Laker and Clara Dutkiewicz each belted a double to add to the fireworks.
