‘Cats blank Hastings to move on to semis

The Wayland softball team Tuesday afternoon posted a 15-0 shutout victory over Hastings in the opening round of the post-season district tournament at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The triumph improved the Wildcats’ overall season record to 29-6. They now are preparing for their second round encounter against tourney host TK at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Interestingly. Wayland and Middleville already have played each other three times earlier this spring. The Wildcats prevailed in shutout wins in a regular season doubleheader, but the Trojans scored a huge upset 7-5 victory in the final round of the TK tournament.

Wayland is fresh from scoring its 30th O-K Gold Conference championship by going 12-0 in league play.

Immediately after the Wayland-TK battle in the district semifinals Saturday will be a noon contest between Hopkins (18-13) and Allegan.

Winners of the semis contests will meet in the finals at 2 p.m.
