The Wayland softball team’s bats have gone silent only twice this spring. Unfortunately, the second time was in the regional semifinals Saturday afternoon.
Hudsonville Unity Christian, which brought a 32-6 record into the contest on its home field, blanked the usually heavy hitting Wildcats 2-0 to end their season with a 29-8-1 overall record.
Wayland finished the season undefeated in the O-K Gold Conference and district champions for the 27th time. It was shut out twice, 2-0 by Grand Haven and Saturday at Hudsonville.
The ‘Cats were handcuffed by Unity Christian pitcher Mackenzie Cammenga, who yielded just four hits in hurling the shutout. Harmony Laker had two singles and Rae Stallard and Kaylee Lown had one apiece.
Sophomore ace hurler Madi Ludema suffered the hardback loss on the mound. She gave up only two unearned runs, yielded five hits, walked one and struck out three.
Unity scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Crusaders were set to face Hamilton, a team they had beaten twice earlier this season, in the regional finals.
