ootball team was pummeled by another heavyweight opponent Friday evening.
This time it was Grand Rapids Catholic Central, the class of the O-K Gold Conference this season, a team with a 5-1 record and a sure-fire post-season playoff squad. The host Cougars, playing on Forest Hills Central’s field, drubbed the Wildcats 50-7.
At first glance, it’s horribly alarming to consider how many points Wayland’s defense is yielding in 2015. The ‘Cats have given up a whopping 254 points in just six games, an average of more than 42 per contest. Furthermore, they have yet to hold an opponent to under 30 in any game.
Yet on the other hand, consider the teams Wayland has been playing. Cedar Springs is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the O-K Bronze. Zeeland West is an undefeated powerhouse, Forest Hills Eastern has emerged with a 6-0 record and Catholic Central sizes up pretty well with all of the aforementioned. The Cougars very likely will be this year’s O-K Gold champion.
The Wildcats fell behind 36-0 at intermission and there was a running clock in the second half.
Wayland lost 49-0 to Catholic Central at home a year ago in a depressing laugher that featured only 20 Wildcats even being dressed for the ballgame.
Wayland, 0-6 overall on the season, will be at Hastings in another O-K Gold Conference matchup next Friday.
