There have been two errors made this week in assessing Wayland’s varsity basketball team.

One official scorer’s mistake robbed the Wildcats of a point in Friday night’s 53-46 win (actually 54-46) over Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills, so it really didn’t matter. One could argue that the second error doesn’t matter as well, but coach Mike Hudson must wonder about what’s happening.

This week’s Associated Press state-wide rankings for this season were announced, and somehow Wayland was dropped from No. 3 to No. 5. Furthermore the Wildcats’ overall season record was reported as 16-2, but it’s actually 17-1. Their only loss this season was to Forest Hills Central during the Cornerstone University high school holiday tournament in late December.

Wayland last week won twice, beating South Christian and Ottawa Hills to capture its first O-K Gold Conference hoops title since 2010. Yet it still fell two places in the Class B state poll.

For those who didn’t know, the game Tuesday night at Wyoming was called off because of inclement weather. Wayland will finish its regular season Thursday evening at home against Holland.

The Wildcats next Monday will play No. 2-ranked Wyoming Godwin Heights in the opening round of the Class B district tourney at South Christian.
