imgThe Wayland varsity baseball team’s season came to an end Tuesday night in a 9-4 loss to Hastings, the opening game of the Division 2 district.

The Wildcats were ultimately doomed by seven costly errors, all of which resulted in runs for the Saxons.

Taking the loss on the mound for Wayland was Carter Morse, who pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs, none of them earned, on 5 hits, while striking out 1. He was relieved by Jeff Betz, pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, on 1 hit, while striking out 3.

Leading the way for the Wildcat offense was Matt Schaendorf, as he went 3-for-4 at the plate.

The Wildcats ended their season with a final record of 16 wins and 21 losses. They evened their record at 16-16 overall late last month with a five-game winning streak, but lost their last five, a doubleheader to Otsego and a twin bill against Wyoming.

It was the first season for coach Trenton Wilcox.
