The Wayland High School boys’ varsity basketball team’s last regularly scheduled game of the season at Holland had to be canceled this week because Michigan High School Athletic Association rules forbid any team from playing more than 20 games before tournaments.

The Wildcats completed their regular season with a 17-3 record overall and were 10-2 in O-K Gold Conference play, second behind Grand Rapids Christian, the state’s No. 1-ranked team in Class A. Wayland was ranked No. 9 in the last Associated Press Class B poll.

The Wildcats will open district tournament play at home Monday against Hopkins. The Vikings (7-12) still have one more game, at Comstock Thursday. Martin (10-9) also has one more regular season contest Thursday, against Marcellus.
