Wildcats win another district softball title

It was no surprise Saturday afternoon when Wayland scored yet another district tournament championship. The only real surprise came in the semifinal round when the ‘Cats escaped another upset bid by Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The host Trojans, who pulled off a 7-5 upset over Wayland last month, this time came within a whisker, 6-5, of doing it again.

The Wildcats then went on to defeat Hopkins 13-3 in the district finals, moving their overall season record to 31-6. They won their 30th O-K Gold Conference title a couple of weeks ago.

The Vikings, perennial second-place finishers in the O-K Silver Conference, completed their campaign with an overall record of 18-15.

Wayland now moves on to the regional tournament to take on South Haven, which defeated Stevensville Lakeshore in the district finals. Lakeshore is the regional tournament host.
