imgThe Wayland varsity baseball team lost its season home opener 6-4 Wednesday to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

The game was halted at the end of six innings because of lightning.

Coach Travis Wilcox said he was disappointed in not having the opportunity to try to pull out the win in the bottom of the seventh because the heart of the Wildcats’ batting order was due up.

Taking the loss on the mound for Wayland was Logan Sevigny, who started the game and went 3 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits, while striking out 2. Mitch Dykstra pitched 2 innings of relief, allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Keaton McNees pitched 2 terrific innings for the wildcats, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out 3.

Leading the way offensively for the Wildcats were Jeff Betz, Travis Cutler and Dykstra. Betz went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s, Cutler went 2-for-3, and Dykstra scored a run while stealing 2 bases.

The Wildcats, now 0-2 overall, head into spring break and will return to action Tuesday, April 12, when they travel to Plainwell High School for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
