Wildcats lose non-league district tuneup at Caledonia

The Wayland varsity softball team tuned up for Saturday’s district tournament Thursday afternoon with an 8-7 non-league loss at Caledonia.

The verdict left the Wildcats with an overall regular season record off 29-9.

The Scots got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of third inning with a five-run rally, but Wayland countered with six runs in the top of the fourth.

But Caledonia scored two in the sixth and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Harmony Laker and Madi Ludema shared pitching duties, with both working three innings. Ludema was charged with the loss on the mound, giving up three runs. The Scots came up with a 15-hit offensive attack while Wayland was limited to six.

Laker had a double and a single and Kami Morse, Ludema, Lauren Wright and Carol Miklusicak each had a single. Miklusicak’s hit knocked in a couple of runs.

It was a strange and lackluster regular season ending, as Wayland beat the Scots 8-1 in a tournament game last month and Caledonia sports an 11-27 record.

The Wildcats will play Allegan at noon Saturday in the first round of the Division 2 district tournament at Wayland’s field. If they win that one, they will meet either Hopkins or South Christian in the tourney finals at 2 p.m.
