The second annual Emma Corneillie Cancer Games featured a doubleheader between host Wayland and Grand Rapids Union Tuesday.
“It was an incredible night of softball, community, and support for a cause close to our hearts,” said coach Cheri Ritz.
The Wildcats swept the doubleheader 22-0 and 15-0.
“We played for those who have battled and for those who are still courageously fighting cancer. This year, we wore blue in our hair in honor of Lyda Lathrop, a reminder of the strength and resilience that inspires us every day.”
Wayland now is 23-4 overall and 10-0 in the O-K Gold Conference.
One interesting highlight of the twin bill was that pitcher-shortstop Madi Ludema tied the school record for doubles in one season at 17, a mark held jointly by Sierra Mutschler and Hailey Houck, both of whom went on to play college ball at Hope.
