The Wayland High School boys’ tennis team came out the gate fast for the start of the 2021 season by blanking Otsego in their home opener Monday night.
Coach Ben Adams said, “The victory did not come without challenges, however, as three matches had to go to third set tie-breakers to settle the match.”
Christian Sieffert won his match at first singles, 6-4, 6-3. Jackson Chesley took his match at second singles 6-2, 6-1.
Andrew Murphy battled his opponent in classic “Andrew Murphy style,” dropping the first set 2-6, but then fought back with heart and soul to take the second set 6-2 and command the third set tie-breaker 10-4.
On the next court over, Nolan Ritz also found himself in a battle for his first home match victory. His Otsego opponent took the first set, 6-3, but then Nolan found his game and took the second set 6-0 and the tie-break at 10-3, closing the match victorious.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Elijah Kincaid and Brady Atwell took Otsego 6-1, 6-4, battling off a second set comeback by the Bulldogs. At #2 doubles, Mark Musgrave and Austin Graham were up to the match and won 6-1, 6-0.
The “Freshmen Sensation” team of Cam Sieffert and Theo Oddy handily won their match, denying the Bulldogs even one game, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The fourth doubles team of Carsen Beck and Chase Robinson had to fight for their victory to the bitter end, dropping the first set 4-6, then winning the second, 6-4, then finding themselves in a grind of a tie-breaker, winning 11-9 in the end.
