The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball season came to end Monday in a 63-47 loss to Dowagiac at Coloma High School in the Class B regional semifinals.

The Wildcats, who claimed the district championship last Friday, finished the campaign with a 10-13 record overall. The Chieftains, now 19-5, will have the unenviable task of taking on a Benton Harbor team that is 22-1 on the season. The regional finals will get under way at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coloma.

Benton Harbor ended Wayland’s season a year ago in the regional finals on a last-second three-point shot.

Wayland took a 12-9 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, but 6-7 senior forward and leading scorer Carter Nyp suffered an ankle injury and was taken to the locker room. He did return to play later in the ballgame.

The Wildcats faltered after the promising start, getting outscored 19-14 in the second period to fall behind 28-26 at intermission.
