Wildcats take 1st Gold win; Vikings lose big yet again

Wayland 17 Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 14

Wayland got back on track Friday night in its 17-14 homecoming victory over Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

It was the first victory this season for the Wildcats in the O-K Gold Conference. Overall they are 3-2. Middleville is winless in five outings.

The Wildcats must win two more the rest of the way to assure their first winning season since 2013 and become eligible to make the playoffs. The road be tough with opponents South Christian and Forest Hills Eastern in league contests, but they have a solid chance against Ottawa Hills and a decent chance vs. Kenowa Hills. They’ll find out a lot more next Friday at Forest Hills Eastern.

Sparta 49 Hopkins 0

The Hopkins varsity football season took a turn for the worse Friday night in a 49-0 drubbing at the hands of Sparta.

The Vikings now are 1-2 in the O-K Silver Conference and 1-4 overall. They must run the table against all remaining opponents in order to come up with a winning season or qualify for the post-season playoffs.

Actually, Hopkins probably would be favored against now winless Kelloggsville and in non-league contests against Decatur and perhaps Benton Harbor. But a victory over Silver opponent Comstock Park probably would qualify as an upset.

The Vikings have qualified for the playoffs in each of their last five seasons, but they’ve got their work cut out for them to do it again this season.

Martin 1, Fennville 0 (Forfeit)

The Clippers didn’t want the verdict to come to them this way, Fennville last Monday announced that it was calling off its football season with an 0-4 overall record, too many injuries and not enough players.

The Blackhawks did field a junior varsity outfit, which lost 48-6 to Martin Thursday night.

The Clippers, just like Hopkins, have qualified for the post-season playoffs and now own a 3-2 overall record. They’ll have to take down two of their last four foes, most notably a Maple Valley squad that is 4-0 and it should be noted that NorthPointe Christian took down Gobles 20-17.

Martin is 2-2 in the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference.
