The Wayland High School baseball squad took two of three contests this week against Cedar Springs to finish at 10-8 in the O-K Gold Conference and 18-11 overall.
The Wildcats bested Cedar 6-2 in the first game, got clobbered 18-0 in the second and came back to win the third, 11-1.
Wayland – 6 Cedar Springs – 2
The Red Hawks got things started in the first inning with a one out, two-run home run. But that was all the scoring the ‘Cats would surrender.
Wayland would get on the board in the second inning when Brady Cassini singled, scoring Brayden Byrne. They would pull away in the fourth inning scoring four runs. Trent Sikkema had a sacrifice to score one, Reagan Mutschler doubled on a 1-2 count scoring two, and Cameron Carnevale drove in a run with a line drive single.
Mutschler would tack on a solo homer in the sixth to finish off the scoring.
The ‘Cats had eight hits in the game, led by Mutschler who was 3-4 with two doubles and a HR and three RBIs. Cassini was 2-3 with an RBI. Dustin Loomans added a double of his own, and Carter Koopman had a single.
Koopman went the distance on the mound, allowing 2 runs, on 5 hits, striking out 2 and walking zero to earn the win.
Wayland – 0 Cedar Springs – 18
In a game that lasted only four innings, not much went in favor for the Wildcats, as Cedar Springs would score 18 runs on 11 hits and six Wildcats’ errors.
The pitching from the Red Hawks was strong, as 9 of the 12 outs were via the strikeout.
The lone bright spot was Bryce Calkins going 2-2 at the plate. Brayden Byrne added a single for the only Wayland hits of the game.
Wayland – 11 Cedar Springs – 1
The Wildcats scored four times in the first and never looked back en route to a 10-run mercy rule in five innings Wednesday.
Bryce Calkins drove in Dustin Loomans with an RBI single to get the scoring started, the ‘Cats scored another run on a passed ball and Brady Cassini added a two-RBI single.
The Cats would push two more runs across the plate in the second, on a Calkins sacrifice fly, scoring Tommy Corneille, and an error scored another run.
In the third they put three more on the board. Mutschler had an RBI single, Cameron Carnevale had an RBI double, Brayden Byrne added an RBI double of his own.
Calkins would finish the scoring by smashing a two-run homer in the fifth. Wayland tallied 13 hits on the day.
Loomans was 3-4, Calkins went 2-3 with four RBIs. Carnevale went 2-3 with an RBI, Cassini was 2-3 with two RBIs. Trent Sikkema and Carter Koopman both added singles
Calkins earned the pitching victory, working five innings allowing one run on four hits striking out six and walking two.
Wayland wound up tied for third place with Kenowa Hills in the conference
The Wildcats will play this Tuesday (March 30) at home in a pre-distrct game vs. Plainwell at 4 p.m on Phil Regan field.
