Wayland Wednesday evening advanced to the district volleyball tournament finals Thursday night by defeating Hamilton in three competitive straight sets, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-21.
The Wildcats’ opponent in the final round will be fellow O-K Gold Conference member South Christian, which got the best of Hopkins 25-16, 25-16 and 25-12 in the other district semifinal contest.
Wayland has beaten the Sailors twice already this season, once in a dual meet last month and again in the O-K Gold tournament semifinals, but there’s an old saying about how difficult it is to beat any opponent three times in the same season.
Hopkins, with the loss to South Christian completed a successful campaign with an overall record of 31-15-3.
The Vikings’ individual statistical leaders were:
• Assists: Corrie Wisser 12.
• Kills: Corrie Wisser 8, Avery Roxbury/Kate Cleypool 6, Mady Weber 2.
• Aces: Maya Kerber 2, Corrie Wisser 1.
• Digs: Corrie Wisser 10, Ellie Sebright/Avery Roxbury 6, Mady Weber 4, Sierra Smith 3, Maya Kerber/Kate Cleypool 2.
Martin was eliminated from the MHSAA volleyball tournament earlier this week in a five-set loss to Gobles.
