Zach Brog pitchingBoys-BaseballWayland pitcher Zach Brog fired a seven-inning no-hitter Monday afternoon and the Wildcats came up with a terrific start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Zeeland East.

Brog went the distance, walking five and striking out seven en route to the no-run, no-hit performance.

The southpaw ace picked up some offensive support from Matt Schaendorf, who went two for three, Sean Maddux, three for four, and Parker Atwell who clubbed a double.

The Wildcats came up with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, and that was more than enough for Brog.

“I loved our energy and intensity,” Doupe said. “We got a few breaks to go our way early, and we just kept feeding off them… and when Brog pitched the way he did tonight, we can compete with anyone.”

The Wildcats overcame a scare in the seventh and final inning when Zeeland East loaded the bases with two outs, “but we tightened up the D and got out with the win,” Doupe said.
