Allegan County Prosecuting Attorney Myrene K. Koch has welcomed the newest member of her staff, the canine advocate Joey, a 20-month old yellow labrador retriever.

He was trained by Leader Dogs for Blind and the Canine Advocate Program of Michigan or CAP. CAP was developed to provide advocacy services to child victims using a highly trained dog to help alleviate anxiety associated with being involved with the criminal justice system. Joey can meet with victims during office visits and also accompany them into the courtroom while they testify.

CAP has placed more than 24 dogs in Michigan with prosecutor’s offices, Children’s Advocacy Centers, counseling services and specialty courts. Through the Leader Dogs for the Blind, CAP and the Crime Victim Foundation, the fees for Joey and his training were covered at no cost to Allegan County.

“Joey will provide a valuable and much needed service to child victim’s in Allegan County,” Koch said. “He will give comfort and support during what can be a very difficult time for victims both in and out of the court. “We are fortunate to offer this service to the most vulnerable of citizens in Allegan County.”

Koch said her office has received support from the Allegan County Board of Commissioners, the County Administrator, all of the Judges in Allegan County, her staff in the Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office, law enforcement personnel, county employees, and the public as well.

Joey also received the services of Mara Jessup as his official photographer.

Those who would like to financially support Joey or offer any services may contact Koch at the Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office.
