The Wayland varsity baseball team lost its season opener 7-2 Monday to Zeeland East in the the first game for head coach Travis Wilcox.
Taking the loss on the mound for the Wildcats was Keaton McNees, who went 3 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs, 2 earned, on 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 6.
Leading the way offensively for the Wildcats was Matt Schaendorf, who was 1-for-2 at the plate and Sean Maddux, who contributed both Wildcat RBIs in the third inning.
The Wildcats were guilty of committing five errors in the field and they managed only one hit.
The game was played at Zeeland East because poor field conditions moved the game from Wayland to Zeeland.
The ‘Cats will be back in action at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, when they are host Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in a double-header.
