Martin boys qualify for cross-country regionals

Carsen Young kicks at the end of the pre-regional race.

The Martin boys’ cross-country team Friday qualified for next week’s Division 4 regional meet by taking fourth place in the pre-regional competition.

The Clippers had 105 team points, following Saugatuck with 20, Gobles 54 and St. Joseph Michigan Catholic 55. The meet was held at the U.S.-131 Motorsports Park near Martin, though the host officially was Saugatuck.

Senior ace harrier Carsen Young finished seventh individually with a five-kilometer time of 18:43.10. He was followed by Eli Dykstra in 23rd place, James Blackburn 25th, Kyle Pallett 29th and Malakai VanVolkinburg 39th.

The girls didn’t have enough individual runners to have a team score. Freshman Elliana Young placed 10th, Mercedes Morin 14th, Zoie Tuinstra 22nd and Aiala Zamanillo 25th.

The Clipper boys will compete in the regionals Saturday, Oct. 31, at Allendale. State finals will take place the following Saturday.
