Wayland High School freshman Ava Makowski broke through the 20-minute barrier at the Division 2 state cross-country championship race at Michigan International Speedway.
Makowski finished 42nd in the state with a five-kilometer time of 19:58.87. Right behind her was sophomore teammate Olivia Barabas, who finished 51st with a time of 20:04.78. Barabas broke the 20-minute barrier the week before in the regionals at Otsego.
Meanwhile, Martin High School senior Carsen Young captured Division 4 all-state honors by finishing 16th individually with a time of 17:19.46.
Young’s freshman sister, Elliana, finished 154th with a time of 23:56.25.
