Martin girls record 4th straight hoops victory

Martin lost its girls’ basketball season opener Nov. 30 when it was doubled up in the final score against Hopkins. Since then, the Lady Clippers have been on a roll.

Coach Ben Schipper’s group scored its fourth straight win on the hardcourt with a 40-22 defensive verdict over Lawton.

“It was great to get a win tonight against a much improved Lawton team,” Schipper said. “It was a rough looking first half for us. We were not being smart with our passes, we were letting their pressure affect us, and our post players were not involved at all.

“After halftime, I felt like our posts took a small step in the right direction at asserting themselves more and our guards looked to penetrate more. We got better ball movement and had some really good looks in the second half.”

Martin took leads of 12-8, 21-13 and 29-16 at the close of the first three periods, letting the defense do most of the talking.

Gracie Shettler again led the offensive attack with 14 points, including four three-point field goals, Makala Goddard added eight and Cirsten Coburn six.

“Tonight we got a great lift off the bench from Liz Reinke,
Schipper said. “She brought a much-needed spark and toughness to the game.”
