Both Martin boys, girls teams have bad day vs. Kalamazoo Christian

It was a bad day for the Martin boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams against Kalamazoo Christian Tuesday.

The Lady Clippers dropped a 47-29 decision and saw their season record fall to 5-3. The boys, meanwhile lost 71-47 and now sport a 1-5 overall season record.

Lady Clippers’ coach Ben Schipper said his team had to play without leading scorer Gracie Shettler, who was injured last Friday night in the team’s loss to Kalamazoo Hackett.

“We got off to a very slow start against K Christian’s tough pressure,” Schipper said. “We handled the pressure much better tonight in terms of not turning the ball over as much as we did against Hackett, but we allowed the defense to take us out of our offensive rhythm. When we actually got into our offense, our cuts were open and we got looks.

“I’m very proud of the way we battled in the second half to the final buzzer. We were only outscored 25-22 in the second half. We were much more aggressive.”

Makala Goddard scored all 12 of her points in the second half on four three-point field goals. Lynsey Jager played strong on defense in spite of some foul trouble.

The coach added, “I also was very happy to see freshman Avery Jager come alive tonight with her aggressive play.”
