It finally had to happen. The Martin High School football squad absorbed its first regular season defeat on the gridiron since it switched in 2018 from 11-man to eight-man football, The Clippers Friday night lost 35-19 to a North Pointe Christian outfit that also switched to the eight-man variety not long after suffering through losing campaigns in the O-K Silver Conference.

The Mustangs improved to on 6-0 the season overall. Martin now is 5-1.

The Clippers had been defeated during the last four regular seasons only once, and that was by forfeit.

It wasn’t all bad news Friday night. Hopkins celebrated Seniors’ Night in its last home game of the season by shutting down Grandville Calvin Christian 35-0.

Wayland indeed hiked its overall season record to 4-2 with a lopsided 45-14 triumph over Ottawa Hills to make their homecoming a positive outing.
