The Martin girls bounced back from a tough loss once again Friday evening by dominating Black River 39-19.

The Lady Clippers played tenacious defense yet again, holding the visiting quintet to just five points in the first half and grabbed a 22-5 cushion at intermission.

“Tonight was a dominant win for us,” said coach Ben Schipper. “We’ve been talking a lot about having the competitive drive to bury teams when we get a lead on them and we finally did that tonight. Our defense was elite in the first half holding Black River to five points.

“Our focus was to limit (River Rats’ top scorer O.) Hayes’ post ups and offensive rebounds and we did exactly that holding her to six points tonight.”

The triumph followed a 43-38 loss Tuesday evening to Schoolcraft.

Liz Reinke returned to the starting starting lineup and provided Martin with an offensive spark. She scored all eight of her points in the second quarter when her teammates pushed their lead to 17.

“I was very happy with Cirsten Coburn’s court vision and attacking mindset tonight,” the coach added, and Lynsey Jager battled Hayes all night.”

Makala Goddard led the Clippers with 13 points and four steals. Avery Jager and Liz Reinke had eight points apiece, with Reinke having five rebounds and three steals, and Coburn had six points, four assists and four rebounds..

The victory improved Martin’s overall season record to 10-3. Its Southwest Athletic Conference Central Division record is 6-0.
