The Wayland and Hopkins High School varsity football teams Friday night absorbed difficult defeats on the gridiron, but Martin found a way to prevail over visiting NorthPointe Christian, 46-30.
The Clippers, who lost 34-19 to an unbeaten 9-0 Mustangs outfit a year ago, this time came out on top to improve their overall season record to 4-2.
Meanwhile, Wayland dropped a heartbreaking O-K Gold Conference encounter at Forest Hills Eastern. The Wildcats led 7-0 at the end of the first period and 14-7 at the half, but eventually bowed 28-14. The Wildcats fell to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in O-K Gold Conference play.
Hopkins was playing its homecoming game Friday night against Comstock Park, and lost 35-29 on a last-second hail Mary play by the Panthers. The Vikings led 29-22 with just two minutes left in the ballgame, but allowed the Panthers to tie the score and then lost on the Hail Mary. They now are 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the O-K Silver Conference.
