Wildcat girls capture 2nd in GR bowling tournament

The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team took second place in the Grand Rapids Christian Invitational at Park Center Lanes and the boys’ team was fourth.

Defending state champion Sparta, took first place by nearly 700 pins in the girls’ competition.

Coach Eric Bottrall said all of the Lady Wildcats picked up lane experience, including Madison Bottrall, Jasmine Ortiz, Brooke Trumbull, Izzy Botwinski, Haven Baker, Ava Harnish, Ashlynn Dykstra and Faith Rabideau.

Haven Baker placed eighth on the all-tournament team.  Ladies three game series ranged from 393 to 484, notably a tough day, as the top female bowlers should reach 500 easily.

The boys faced challenges as well from the Phantom II oil pattern.

“We either went through the pocket, leaving splits and washouts, or went Brooklyn (other side of the headpin),” boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak said.  “Scores were overall lower than normal for everyone!”

The top 10 boys’ three-game series ranged from 480 to 714. There were five guys who placed in the top 10 and didn’t even break 500.

“Everyone bowled today and filled at least eight frames,” Miklusicak said.

Kyle VanEss made the all-tournament team (top ten), by placing fifth with scores of 162, 190 and 161.
