
The Wayland High School softball won its second doubleheader this week Friday with a sweep of Kalamazoo Christian.
The Lady Wildcats lifted their overall season record to 9-2 by defeating the visiting Comets 16-4 and 7-3.
Senior Harmony Laker had a big day, taking the win on the mound and clouting a pair of home runs as part of a 3-for-3 day at the plate. The 16-4 game was halted in the fifth inning because Wayland’s lead had exceeded 10 runs.
Laker yielded four runs on nine hits walked no one and struck out one.
Also helping the offensive cause were Madi Ludema with a double, Laker a triple , Shelby VanHouten three hits and the team collected 15 safeties in all.
Ludema, Kaylee Lown ,Rae Stallard and Izzy Johnson each had two hits.
The twin bill opener was a lot less of an offensive showcase, as the ‘Cats were limited to nine hits, three by winning pitcher Ludema.
Wayland scored twice in the first inning, plated three in the second, two in the third, but did not score the rest of the way. Van Houten, Laker and Clara Dutkiewicz each delivered two hits and VanHouten, Lown and Laker had two runs batted in apiece.
The Lady Wildcats Saturday will play in the Holland Invitational, taking on Hudsonvillle Unity Christian at 9 a.m., Livonia Stevenson at 11 and Grand Haven at 1 p.m.
