The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team claimed its 12th victory in 13 starts this season with a special non-conference 57-42 victory Saturday afternoon over Stevensville Lakeshore.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class B Associated Press poll, were playing the Lancers in the first of five contests scheduled for the Grand Rapids Union Showcase, featuring some of the best players and teams in the area.
Wayland was playing less than 24 hours after defeating O-K Gold Conference rival Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 48-36 Friday evening.
Head varsity coach Mike Hudson was not in attendance because of family health emergencies. His eldest son, Wes, took over the squad.
Junior point guard Avery Hudson led Wayland with 19 points, five assists and three steals.
The ‘Cats are off until Friday night when they entertain Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
