Hopkins-Wayland ‘Border Wars’ will return Aug. 26

Spread the word — The “Border Wars” are back.

After a six-year hiatus, the football season opener between neighborhood rivals Wayland and Hopkins has returned, with the contest scheduled for Aug. 26.

The two schools played between 2012 and 2015, and Hopkins won all four, but once only 19-12 and another time only 34-28. The series was terminated with the 2016 season, but now has been resurrected, perhaps helped along by the fact Wayland Athletic Director Adam Valk served at both schools.

Proponents have said the gate and concessions revenue was a huge reason to continue the rivalry. Because the two schools are geographically close, many local football enthusiasts consider it a night out on a Thursday evening, and they’re not afraid to buy goodies that support both schools’ athletic programs.
