Wildcats blank Ottawa Hills; win streak reaches 17

The Wayland varsity softball team pushed its winning streak to 17 Wednesday afternoon with a 27-0 and 21-0 sweep of O-K Gold Conference opponent Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills.

In the opener, Kennedy Cole went 4-for-4 with a double, Kaelyn Sikkema had a double and two singles, Rya Vanderkooi came up with a double and a home run, Reese Veltman had a triple and a single, Emma Ludema had two hits and Liberty Laker, Harmony Laker and Emma Tornes one hit apiece.

Ludema pitched three innings and struck out eight.

In the nightcap, leading the Wildcat offensive attack was Kami Morse (2-2), with a home run, and Hannah Rairigh, (2-2) with a double, Kennedy Cole (2-2), and Harmony Laker, (2-2), with a triple and a double.  Rya VanderKooi was 2-3, with a triple.  Other Wildcats getting hits were Kaelyn Sikkema and Emma Tornes.

Taking the victory on the mound was Harmony Laker, striking out 7 out of 9 batters in 3 innings of play.

Wayland now is 8-0 in O-K Gold Conference action this spring and 17-1 overall.
