Hopkins takes 2nd straight sweep of a doubleheader

Jessi Spray and Cami Hibma

The Hopkins softball team scored a doubleheader sweep at Kelloggsville Tuesday by margins that resembled football scores.

The Lady Vikings came up with 28-0 and 25-0 triumphs to run their O-K Silver Conference record to 4-0 and 6-2 overall. The Vikings Monday had swept a non-league twin bill from Gobles.

Hannah Brinks tossed a three-inning shutout in the opener in three innings of work, walking one and striking out eight.

Meanwhile, the bats were booking for Hopkins, which collected 18 hits. Madison Washburn, Rhi Brefke Kate Steffes and Madison Schwartz led the parade with three hits apiece and Jessi Spray hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and a home run. Brinks and catcher Lyla Reynolds added their customary offensive fireworks.

The assault continued in the second game, as Hopkins played 19 runs in the second inning. Doing plenty of damage was Ava Vanderkolk, who had a double and a triple, and Brinks came up with three hits. Also collecting multiple hits was Cami Hibma, who joined Spray in stealing bases and she contributed a homer.

Freshman Gracie Stallard scored her second varsity mound victory, hurling three inning, yielding three hits and striking out six without issuing a walk.

The Lady Vikings next will play in the Silver Division in the Gull Lake Invitational Saturday, opening against Paw Paw.
