Lady Wildcats blank Allendale 4-0 to start soccer season

imgThe Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team had great start to the season with a 4-0 nonleague win on the road against Allendale Tuesday evening.

A wet field in Wayland forced the game to be moved to Allendale. Despite playing on the road, the Lady Wildcats set the tone early in the game. After fighting through a sluggish first 10 minutes, they came up with numerous chances to take the lead while moving the ball around with pace and purpose. However, they couldn’t break the draw at the sound of the halftime whistle.

The second half saw the Wildcats come out with more intensity, and Mckenna Bruin netted her first varsity goal to put Wayland up 1-0 at 2:44 into the half. Less than 10 minutes later, Ali Cutler added her first goal of the season to double the lead. Rachel Schaffer and Brinley Nieuwenhuis rounded out the scoring for the girls with a goal apiece Ashlyn Schafer, Cutler and Lynnsey Hooker all added assists in the game.

Paxton Granger had her first career shutout as a Wildcat varsity keeper making three saves in the win.

The girls have spring break next week, but come back to a home game vs. Zeeland West Tuesday, April 12.
