A first: Vikings don’t take 1st in invitational

Centreville Monday accomplished something that few track teams have this spring. It defeated both the Hopkins boys and girls in an invitational.

The Centreville girls edged Hopkins by a 177.66 to 175.5 count and the boys scored 177 points to the third place Vikings’ 110.5.

There were some quality performances.

Riley Homrich continued her winning ways in the 100-meter dash, winning g in 12.93 seconds. She won the 200 in 26.1 seconds and teammate Navaya Ingle was runner-up, as she was in the open 400-meter run.

Kambria Moored kept her winning streak going in the 110-meter high hurdles with a first place time of 16.45 seconds and teammate Andrea Brower came in second. The two followed up with a 1-2 finish in the 300-meter hurdles, with Moored check in at 48.54 seconds.

The Vikings scored a first by three seconds in the 400-meter relay, featuring Elliot VanderVeen. Moored, Ellarie Baugh and Homrich, in 50.88 seconds. The Vikings scored a first again in the 800 relay with Ava VanderVeen, Elliot VanderVeen, Ingle and Homrich checking in at 1:52.14.

Keilah Bonga had to settle for third in the shot put, but she roared back in the discus to win with a toss of 104-8.

Ellarie Baugh came up with a surprise first place in the pole vault by clearing 8-3. And she was first in the long jump at 17-4.

The guys finished third behind Centreville and Grand Rapids Covenant Christian.

Jacob Helder was third and Alexander Chavez fourth in the 200-meter dash. Helder crossed the finish line first in the 400 in 52.59 seconds.

Freshman Kash Moored was impressive in finishing second in the 800.

Clayton Kerber did his usual magic in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.68 seconds, but he was edged in the 300 meters by just 14-hundredths of a second.

The 1600-meter relay quartet was third, but that was the only scoring the Vikings could muster in the relay events.’

Frosh sensation Luke Kline had to settle for runner-up after clearing 12-0 in the pole vault. Graycin Ingle was third at 11-6.

Parker Warners and Logan Couch captured third and fourth places in the long jump.
