Both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams lost non-conference basketball encounters Tuesday evening.

The Lady Wildcats saw their overall season record slip to 7-6 with a 50-43 loss at Comstock Park.

Meanwhile, the Wayland boys came up short 68-48 at home to Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, reducing their overall record to 3-8.

Martin also had a tough day on the home court Tuesday. The boys fell 57-41 to invading Lawton in another SAC ballgame and sank to 3-8. The girls had their season record evened at 6-6 with a tight 39-36 defeat at the hands of the Blue Devils.

The Lady Clippers and Lawton played a game that was close the entire evening.

“Last night was a very well played basketball game for the most part,” coach Ben Schipper said.

Lawton called a sideline out of bounds play to put them up 3 with about 30 seconds left.

“We got the shot we wanted for Gracie (Shettler) to tie it with about 15 seconds left, but it just didn’t fall,” Schipper added. “Our team struggled mightily shooting last night. We went 4-27 from 3 point land and 9-22 for two points against their zone defenses.

“We addressed some things at halftime and came out much more aggressive with our dribble drive against their zone. That opened up some post looks as well as kickouts, but we just couldn’t make shots at the clip we normally do.”

Makala Goddard led Martin with 14 points (4 threes), Gracie had 8 and Avery Jager had 6.
