Former Wayland High School varsity football coach Jerry Diorio has been hired as head coach at Battle Creek Lakeview High School.

Diorio, who guided the Wildcats to the post-season playoffs four times, takes over for Matt Miller, who stepped down last season with a 49-29 record as head coach, including 4-5 last year.

Diorio most recently was assistant to Elliott Uzelac at Benton Harbor for three years part of a program that received national recognition for  success building a positive and successful football environment focused on academics and personal improvement. He also served as assistant principal.

Diorio will also teach social studies at Lakeview Middle School.

Diorio was head coach at Wayland, making the playoffs four seasons, in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and again in 2013. He was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2007. He was terminated in 2014 after going winless in two seasons and winning only once in another.

Diorio played at the University of Michigan under Bo Schembechler from 1981-83 and was named second-team All-Big Ten. He also played professionally as a replacement for the Detroit Lions.

Congrats coach. Wayland hasn't been competitive since you left.
