Both the Belding boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams surprised the Hopkins squads Tuesday by taking second in the latest O-K Silver jamboree.
The Belding girls bested the Lady Vikings 54-58 to be the runner-up to Calvin Christian’s 29. Calvin has won every league meet this far this season and Hopkins had been second as well — until Tuesday the home course of North Pointe Christian.
The Viking boys suffered the same fate, falling to third behind Calvin Christian (26 points) and Belding (61 points), with 72 points.
Sophomore Laura Velderman won the individual race with a time of 21:01.03, but she was pushed by Kayce Rypma of Calvin, who was nearly three seconds behind. Viking sophomore Jasmine Fisher was third at 21:10.03.
Madison Snoeyink was ninth, Hannah Crouch 21st and Alyssa Rausch 29th.
Missing from the lineup for Hopkins was sophomore Emma Helder, who suffered from breathing problems at the Portage Invitational the previous Saturday.
Dan Rausch again led the Viking boys by taking fifth in 18:42.41. Ethan Nagel was ninth, Todd Henley 10th, Zach Nutter 19th and Alex Bolthouse 41st.
