Both Viking track teams go 2-1 at Silver quad at Sparta

Both the Hopkins boys’ and girls’ track teams Tuesday defeated Comstock Park and NorthPointe Christian, but lost to host Sparta in an O-K Silver Conference quad meet.

The guys lost to Sparta 99-38, but bested Comstock Park 86.5 to 42.5 and NorthPointe 76-52. Meanwhile the Lady Vikings dropped a 77.5 to 55.5 decision to the host team, but claimed a 64-54 victory over Comstock Park and an 88-36 win over NorthPointe.

The Viking boys swept the top three places in the shot put. Junior Mason Tomes tossed the sphere 45-09.5, followed by seniors Tanner Neuman and Josh Tew. Tomes, Tew and Neuman came back to go 2-3-4 in the discus.

Junior Zander Hitzler leaped 5-6 in the cold weather to place first in the high jump.

Neuman went 17-10 to take third overall in the long jump.

Senior Trevor Shealy finished second overall in the 100-meter dash and turned in a runner-up finish in the 200.

Adam Ball, Caleb Beilby, Alexander Chavez and Jacob Helder hooked up for a second-place finish in the 3200-meter relay. Ball and freshman Jacob Helder went 2-3 in the 800.

For the girls, freshman Kambria Moored captured two firsts in the hurdles, winning the100-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.31 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 52.77.

The 400-meter relay unit was first with Alex Jackson, Navaya Ingle, Emma Bartz-Peck and Vanessa Berry. They crossed the finish line in 57.6 seconds.

Senior Grace Brenner owned the shot put by a wide margin, taking first with a toss of 35-11.5. She also won the discus handily at 82-10.

Sophomore Sierra Emaus was second overall in the 200, as was Nevaeh Helderop in the 800 and Helena Kerber third. Kerber finished second overall in the open 3200. Berry was runner-up in the long jump.

So both Viking teams ended the day with 2-1 O-K Silver Conference dual meet records.
