Cedar Springs Friday night handed Wayland its first loss the young basketball season, 54-51, in what used to be a conference matchup.

Both the Red Hawks and Wildcats customarily played in the O-K Gold Conference until this year, when Cedar was one of seven teams that bolted to form the River Valley Conference.

The defeat dropped Wayland’s overall record to 3-1.

One observer of this Friday night contest mused, “ I went to a basketball game and a football game broke out… The refs didn’t take of the safety of the girls whatsoever.”

Addie Sikorski tallied 17 points on the inside. Harmony Laker was held to nine points. The ‘Cats made only four three-point field goals, two by Izzy Johnson, one by Marissa Ainsworth and another by Laker.

The Wildcats now have a 3-1 record overall and Byron is winless thus far in its four games.

The Martin girls suffered their third straight defeat after winning their first two encounters. Once agin, it was a lack of offense that did in the Clippers.

However, it should be noted that Saugatuck now is undefeated in its first four ballgames.
