Brenden Gossman, Viking teammates bowl in state tourney

Hopkins High School freshman Brenden Gossman qualified for the match play round of the state Division 3 individual bowling tournament in Jackson Saturday, but he lost in the opening round of the final 16.

The Hopkins boys’ bowling team Friday finished 12th in the state Division 3 team tournament.

Gossman rolled a score good enough to place seventh among 60 bowlers, but lost 504-353 to Gage Nickelson of Kelloggsville in the first round of match play to bow out of the competition. His scores were 223, 180, 208, 156, 256 and 209

The Vikings rolled up 3,117 pins in the team tourney, six pins behind 11th place Ishpeming. They rollled 215, 158, 227, 152, 190, 161, 134 and 149 in the eight Baker games. Their scores were 864 and 867 in the individual games.

Essexville Garber was the Division 3 team champion with 3,342 total pins and Saginaw Swan Valley was first in match play competition. Daniel Higgins of Olivet was the individual champion.
