‘Cat guys win upset vs. TK; girls now 2nd in league

The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team Friday night scored a mild upset victory on its home court by edging Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 52-51.

The victory lifted the Wildcats guys’ overall season record to 3-17, 2-10 in the O-K Gold Conference. Middleville is 8-12.

The Wayland girls, meanwhile, climbed back into second place in the O-K Gold Conference standings by turning back Thornapple Kellogg by a 63-43 count.

Sophomore inside player Addy Sikorsky scored a career-high 21 points on field goals and three free throws. Junior Harmony Laker tossed in 15 points, including a couple of three-point buckets and senior Reese Coughlin contributed 10 points.

The verdict left the Lady Wildcats with a 9-2 record in league play. Cedar Springs, which was tied with Wayland for second place, lost a close battle with league-leading Grand Rapids Catholic Central and slipped into third place.

The Lady Wildcats overall now are 13-6. Middleville now owns a 10-8 overall record, 4-8 in the league.
