The Wayland boys’ varsity cross-country team finished third in the Allegan Invitational Saturday at the Allegan County fairgrounds and Hopkins girls tied for second.

The Wildcats had 20 team points in the first division race, which included only the top three runners from each team. Hamilton won with 13 and the Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines had 19 among the eight teams.

Devin Weaver again paced the Wayland efforts with a time of 16:23.41 over the 5,000-meter race, good for second place individually. Dylan Pallet checked in at 16:36.81 for fifth place and Isaac Dyer was 13th in 17:38.59.

Jack Estelle was the first Hopkins runner to cross the finish line, in 17:32.13, good for 10th place. Kenyon Katie was 24th in 19:28.9 and Nathan Underlined 25th in 20:06.11. The Vikings finished seventh as a team.

There also was a Division II varsity race, in which Wildcat junior James Butler led wire to wire and finished first in 17:06.94. Will Gavin was 12th in 18:44.07 and Ethan Manning 23rd in 20:41.67. For Hopkins, Vijay DeZeeuw was was 26th, Jonathan Buskirk 28th and Adam Halsted 29th, all freshmen.

In the girls’ race, Hopkins tied Sturgis for second place with 22 points, three points ahead of fourth-place Wayland.

Three Viking harriers finished in the top 10, Neveah Helderop sixth in 20:19.07, Jaeden Harshberger seventh in 20:27.97 and Kambria Moored 10th in 20:50.98.

Wildcat senior ace Olivia Barabas was individual runner-up in 19:19.58. Noelle House was 11th in 20:58.13 and Elliot Angel 15th in 21:20.11.

In the Division II contest, Hopkins’ Abigail Zalis was was 13th, Grace Schumacher 19th and Myah Duimstra 24th. Emma Thayer led the Wildcats in seventh place, Megan Stack was 18th and Emily Tuinstra 20th.
