‘Cats now 6-1 overall, but Vikings’ win streak ends

The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team hiked its O-K Gold Conference record to 2-0, 6-1 overall, with a 72-60 verdict over Middleville Thornapple Kellogg Tuesday night.

However, the Hopkins boys saw their winning streak end at home, 68-47, against what coach Jake Jewett called a very talented Calvin Christian team.

“We played tough in the first quarter, but couldn’t keep up …  They shot the ball extremely well from beyond the arc.

“Even through a loss, I’m proud of the way we competed, played team basketball, and didn’t give up. Our starters and bench came out with great energy and stuck together. That speaks very highly of their team-first attitude and character. There’s no doubt we got better tonight.”

Hopkins had been riding a five-game winning streak, but now has a 6-2 overall record.

Tristen Perry finished with 12 points, and Micah Estelle contributed 11.

The Vikings’ next game is Friday night at home vs. NorthPointe Christian.
