Cedar Springs’ late heroics overcomes Wildcats 35-28

Cedar Springs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat Wayland Friday night, 35-28.

The visiting Wildcats led throughout most of the contest, notably 21-14 at halftime. They scored in the early fourth period to grab a 28-21 advantage, but the Red Hawks answered with a TD on the first play after Wayland’s ensuing kickoff and added the game winner before holding off a gallant ‘Cats last-ditch attempt to knot the count again.

The game was an important indicator for Wayland’s season because Cedar Springs is shooting for its sixth straight playoff season and it topped the Wildcats a year ago by a 35-21 count.

Wayland now has an overall record of 2-2, but it is 0-2 in O-K Gold Conference play. Cedar also is 2-2 overall.

Vikings capture 1st triumph of season

Hopkins Friday night put the finishing touches on a nightmarish season start by recording a 20-6 victory at Wyoming Godwin Heights.

The Vikings took a 6-0 advantage in just the first five and a half minutes and then added a touchdown and two-point conversion late in the second quarter to mount a 14-0 lead at intermission.

Both teams added a TD in the second half.

It was the first victory for Hopkins after three awful losses in its first three games. The Vikings now are 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the O-K Silver Conference. They will be at home next Friday night against Sparta, which is vying for the league title.

Clippers get rolled by Gobles

Gobles looked a lot like Martin has in the past several seasons by handling the Clippers their worst regular season lost in a quite a spell, 53-16.

The host Tigers pushed their overall season record to 4-0, winning by wide margins in all of their encounters this season.

Gobles enjoyed a 27-8 cushion at the half and appeared not to be in any trouble throughout the evening.

The Clippers, meanwhile, suffered their second straight loss after a two-point heartbreaker to Bridgman and now own a 2-2 overall record.
