Clipper girls lose to quality Lawton squad

The Martin High School girls; varsity basketball team dropped a 41-30 decision Wednesday night to Lawton.

The visiting Blue Devils turned out to be one of the better opponents this season leaving the gym with a 7-2 overall record. The Clippers, with the loss, fell to 4-6.

The Clippers led throughout the first three quarters, but were outscored 18-5 in the last eight minutes.

“I was really proud of our effort tonight against a solid Lawton team, especially since we weren’t able to practice since our last game on Friday,” said coach Ben Schipper. “Our execution was solid through the first three quarters. I thought our half court defense was tremendous throughout the game. We held them to three points through the first quarter and a half.

“A couple of Lawton’s shooters got hot towards the end of the third and in the fourth and that was the difference in the game. They hit seven threes in the second half and then their pressure cracked us in the fourth quarter a bit leading to a few easy buckets for them and we just couldn’t overcome that at the end.”

Marybeth Ritchie scored six points, Anna Jager, Torryn Harris, Macy Thorne and Avery Jager each tallied five.

“Mary Beth Ritchie and Avery Jager were great rim protectors with many highlight reel blocks and altering shots,”,Schipper said. “They were both incredibly smart and disciplined getting the clean blocks. Our ball movement and player movement continues to improve leading to more open shots. We just forfeited too many possessions tonight with our turnovers.”
